Eight Leigh on Sea artists were the focal exhibitors at a prestigious Danish arts event this year. The annual Kunst i Slusen ART HVIDE SANDE is now in its seventh year and attracts between four and six thousand visitors over two weeks.
Local artists John Adams, Sharon Byrne, Karen Christensen, Simon Feather, Simon Kirk, Lester Mills, Tricia North and Sandra Wray were all chosen to stage the main art exhibition at the event in the harbour town of Hvide Sande on the west coast of Denmark. The exhibition was curated by Leigh artist and Art Trail regular Andrew Haines, who now lives in Hvide Sande.
The main exhibition took place in a 120 metre long machine room, locally called the ‘Slusen’, hence ‘Kunst i Slusen’ or ‘Art in the Slusen’. This machine room runs under the bridge linking the north and south sides of Hvide Sande and controls the flow of water between the surrounding North Sea and Ringkøbing fjord. This unique industrial space complete with working machinery is not normally open to the public and attracts many visitors itself. In addition to the main exhibition the artists also organised a number of events outside – ‘happenings’, installations, art workshops and interactive public art projects.
UK artist Andrew Haines exhibited at the event in 2009. A resident of Hvide Sande for many years, he was invited by the Kunst i Slusen ART HVIDE SANDE committee to curate the event this year. He retains strong links with Leigh on Sea and still exhibits at the annual Leigh Art Trail event. For him, the parallels between the two towns were clear. They are both fishing ports. Hvide Sande is and Leigh on Sea was a boat building port. Both are known and loved by holiday makers with beaches popular for sunbathing and swimming, but also have strong artistic communities with thriving art scenes. He said:
”Apart from the strata of top international names there are many British artists of extremely high quality, widely exhibited at home but below the radar of the big international galleries. Therefore, they are seldom seen outside the UK. The chance to see the works of a group of highly renowned artists from Leigh on Sea is a rare opportunity for Hvide Sande and art lovers in West Jutland.”
Kunst I Slusen ART HVIDE SANDE takes place in July and August in Hvide Sande, Denmark.
